Subtraction using Regrouping or Borrowing
- Step 1: Arrange the provided numbers 8.6, 5.9 to align them properly in respective columns for ones, tens, hundreds, and Thousands to tenths, hundredths, and thousandths… stacking them vertically. Make sure the decimal points are aligned for both numbers.
- Step 2: Always convert the decimal numbers to like decimals, wherever needed, Add zeros in the places where the length of the decimal numbers is not the same.
- Step 3: Begin by subtracting the ones place digits. If the digit on the bottom is greater than the digit above it, borrow one from the tens place and add it to the bottom digit before subtracting.
- Step 4: Once the borrowing is done, subtract the ones place digits. Then, decrease the tens place digit by one.
- Step 5: Continue this process for the remaining digits.
